How We Locate and Clear Blocked Downspouts
Most blockages happen at the lower elbow — the 90-degree turn that redirects water from vertical to horizontal before it enters an underground pipe. We start by running a hose from the top of each downspout. If water backs up instead of flowing out, we know the blockage is in the downspout, not the gutter. We then clear it from the bottom using a plumber's auger or high-pressure water. For downspouts connected to underground drains, we check the exit point at the curb or yard drain. If the underground line itself is clogged, we will tell you — that is a separate job requiring drain augering.
Signs You Need This Service
- Water backing up at the base of the downspout during rain
If water is pooling or bubbling up from the ground right at the downspout, the underground connection or the elbow is blocked.
- Gutters overflow only at the downspout end
If the rest of the gutter is clean but water spills over at the point where the downspout connects, the downspout is blocked and backing water up into the gutter.
- Soil erosion or pooling directly below the downspout exit
If water is not being routed away from the house and is instead pooling at the foundation, the underground drain connected to the downspout may be blocked.
- The downspout sounds dull when tapped near the bottom
A hollow sound at the top but a dull, dense sound near the lower elbow often indicates compacted debris at that point. This is a reliable way to identify where the blockage is.
What Affects the Cost
- Whether the blockage is in the downspout itself or in the underground drain connection
- Number and height of downspouts on the property
- Access — downspouts against a fence or hedge are harder to work on from both sides
- Whether the job is standalone or combined with a full gutter cleaning (combined service costs less)
When You Do Not Need to Hire Us
If your gutters are overflowing mid-run — not near the downspout — the problem is in the gutter itself, not the downspout. A standard gutter cleaning is what you need. We diagnose the source of any overflow before starting work, so you are not paying for downspout cleaning when the actual problem is debris in the gutter run.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can a clogged downspout cause foundation damage?
- Yes. When a downspout cannot drain, water pools at the base of the foundation wall. Over time, that standing water creates hydrostatic pressure that leads to cracks, efflorescence, and water intrusion in finished basements.
- How do I know if it is the downspout or the gutter that is blocked?
- If water spills over the gutter mid-run, the gutter is blocked. If the gutter is clear but water overflows or backs up at the downspout connection, the downspout is the problem.
- Do you clean underground downspout drains?
- We flush and test underground connections and can clear blockages at the downspout exit point. If the underground pipe itself is clogged beyond the exit, that requires drain augering — a separate service we can point you toward.
